Zaha Hadid wint Pritzker Prize 2004

22-03-2004 - Zaha Hadid wint als eerste vrouw de Pritzker Architecture Prize 2004. Hadid, 53 jaar, is bekend door haar eigenzinnige en moeilijk te realiseren projecten.

Haar bekendste gerealiseerde projecten zijn: het brandweerstation van Vitra Design in Weil am Rhein te Duitsland (1991-93), "Park + Ride" met tramstation Hoenheim Nord bij Straatsburg, Frankrijk (1999-2000), de skischans op een berg bij Innsbruck (1999-2002) en het Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnatti, Verenigde Staten (1997-2003). Projecten in ontwikkeling zijn onder andere: Het Wetensschapscentrum in Wolfsburg, een Masterplan voor Bilbao en een station voor de hogesnelheidstrein bij Napels.

Pritzker Prize juryvoorzitter, Lord Rothschild, zegt over de keuze voor Hadid: "At the same time as her theoretical and academic work, as a practicing architect, Zaha Hadid has been unswerving in her commitment to modernism. Always inventive, she's moved away from existing typology, from high tech, and has shifted the geometry of buildings. In her fourth year at the Architectural Association in London, as a student of Rem Koolhaas (himself a recent recipient of the Pritzker Prize) her graduation project was called Malevich's Tectonik. She placed a hotel on the Hungerford Bridge on the Rivers Thames, drawing from suprematist forms to meet the demands of the programme and the site. It's a happy coincidence therefore that this year's prize ceremony should be taking place in St. Petersburg, Russia, where Malevich lived and worked, a city of extraordinary beauty and originality."

De prijs, een bedrag van honderd duizend dollar en een bronzen medaille, zullen officieel worden uitgereikt op 31 mei van dit jaar in het State Hermitage Museum te St. Petersburg.
