Pritzker Prize 2003 voor Jørn Utzon

07-04-2003 - De Deense architect Jørn Utzon, die het wereldberoemde Sydney Opera House (1957-1973) ontwierp, is gekozen tot de winnaar van de Pritzker Architecture Prize 2003. De 84 jaar oude Utzon is inmiddels met pensioen, hij woont in een zelf ontworpen woning op het eiland Majorca. Zijn twee zoons, Jan en Kim, zetten de praktijk van Utzon Architects in Haarby, Denemarken voort.

Thomas J. Pritzker, president van de Hyatt Foundation, zegt over de keuze van de jury, "Jørn Utzon has designed a remarkably beautiful building in Australia that has become a national symbol to therest of the world. In addition, in a most distinguished career, he has designed several other significant works, including housing complexes, a church, residences, and other commercial buildings. We are delighted that the jury has seen fit to recognize this great talent as we celebrate our first quarter of a century."

Utzon is de eerste Deen die de Pritzker Prize krijgt en de 27ste prijswinnaar sinds 1979, de eerste keer dat de prijs werd gegeven.
